How to choose a safe, hygienic nail salon in Vietnam: a 10-point checklist and 2026 prices
Nail fungus and skin infections from unsterilised tools are a real risk. A 10-point check you can do in two minutes at the salon, 2026 prices for gel and extensions, and aftercare, reviewed by a dermatologist.

Quick answer
- Three things you must see in the first two minutes: metal tools opened from sealed sterilisation pouches, single-use files and buffers (or your own kit), fresh towels and a lined or scrubbed foot basin.
- 2026 prices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi: gel polish 80,000 to 150,000₫ (US$3 to 6); gel or acrylic extensions 250,000 to 450,000₫; nail art 20,000 to 80,000₫ per nail; pedicure 150,000 to 250,000₫.
- UV/LED curing lamps are safe for most people; use hand sunscreen or fingerless gloves if you get gel monthly for years.
- Walk out if you see files reused between clients, cuticles cut until they bleed, or thick acetone fumes with no extraction.
Nails are the third most-booked beauty service on BookMe and the one that generates the most safety questions: "are the tools clean?", "is gel bad for my nails?", "why did my nails turn yellow after acrylics?". This article collects the answers from my years managing spas, reviewed by dermatologist Dr. Lê Lan Anh.
The 10-point check in the first two minutes
You can verify all of this before sitting down:
- Metal tools (nippers, scissors, pushers) opened from a sealed sterilisation pouch in front of you. Pouches with a colour-change indicator are best.
- Single-use files, buffers and wooden sticks, or a labelled kit kept for you. These are the items most often reused.
- Fresh towel and table liner for every client.
- Foot basins with a disposable liner or scrubbed and disinfected between clients.
- A dust extractor at the table for filing gel or acrylic, or at least masks for both of you.
- The technician washes or sanitises hands before starting; your hands get sprayed too.
- No deep cuticle cutting: good technicians push and trim only dead skin; bleeding means poor technique and infection risk.
- Labelled products: gels, powders and primers with brand names; unlabelled bottles are a red flag.
- Clean lamps with working bulbs: under-cured gel irritates skin.
- Bright, ventilated space without acetone fumes strong enough to sting your eyes.
On BookMe, venues with the Verified badge have submitted photos of their sterilisation area and committed to single-use consumables. Search reviews for "tools" or "towel" to read real observations.

Are gel and UV lamps harmful? (Dr. Lan Anh explains)
LED curing lamps emit low-intensity UVA for 30 to 60 seconds per coat. For someone getting gel once or twice a month the total dose is tiny compared with daily sun. For people who have worn gel continuously for years, I recommend:
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen on the backs of the hands 20 minutes before, or fingerless UV gloves.
- Never pick gel off: it takes the top layer of the nail with it, causing thinning and splitting. Remove with a 10 to 15 minute acetone soak or a skilled e-file.
- Stop and see a doctor if the skin around the nail turns red, itchy or blistered: this can be an allergy to acrylates in cheap unlabelled gels.
Aftercare
- Cuticle oil every night; gloves for dishes.
- Do not use nails as tools for lids and labels.
- Remove and redo after 3 weeks for gel, 4 for acrylic; longer growth creates a moisture gap that breeds fungus.
- Yellow, thick or smelly nails: stop extensions and book a dermatology visit.
Styles by occasion
- Daily office: one-colour nude or dusty pink gel; medium length, oval shape for fewer breaks.
- Weddings and parties: almond builder gel, thin French, small stones; do a trial two weeks before.
- Tết: red, metallic gold, apricot-blossom art; book before the 26th of the last lunar month (see the pre-Tết timeline).
- Pregnancy: choose a well-ventilated salon using "5-free" products; avoid fume-heavy shops.
Book your preferred technician at a nail salon near you: posted prices, sterilised tools, free cancellation up to 4 hours before.
Frequently asked questions
Can a manicure give me nail fungus?
Yes, if tools are not sterilised or an extension lifts and traps moisture. Signs: yellow, thick nails separating from the bed. Stop extensions and see a dermatologist early.
How often should I take a break from gel?
If removed correctly (acetone soak, no picking) you can wear it continuously. If nails become thin, weak or split, take 2 to 4 weeks off and use cuticle oil.
What is the difference between gel polish and gel extensions?
Gel polish is a thin colour layer on your natural nail, lasting 2 to 3 weeks. Builder gel adds thickness and length, lasts 3 to 4 weeks and costs 2 to 3 times more.
Do nail salons in Vietnam need a licence?
Nail salons register as ordinary beauty businesses and do not need a Department of Health licence like tattoo studios. So rely on hygiene observation, real reviews and BookMe's 'Verified' badge.
