How to choose a safe, hygienic nail salon in Vietnam: a 10-point checklist and 2026 prices

The 10-point check in the first two minutes

You can verify all of this before sitting down:

1. Metal tools (nippers, scissors, pushers) opened from a sealed sterilisation pouch in front of you. Pouches with a colour-change indicator are best.
2. Single-use files, buffers and wooden sticks, or a labelled kit kept for you. These are the items most often reused.
3. Fresh towel and table liner for every client.
4. Foot basins with a disposable liner or scrubbed and disinfected between clients.
5. A dust extractor at the table for filing gel or acrylic, or at least masks for both of you.
6. The technician washes or sanitises hands before starting; your hands get sprayed too.
7. No deep cuticle cutting: good technicians push and trim only dead skin; bleeding means poor technique and infection risk.
8. Labelled products: gels, powders and primers with brand names; unlabelled bottles are a red flag.
9. Clean lamps with working bulbs: under-cured gel irritates skin.
10. Bright, ventilated space without acetone fumes strong enough to sting your eyes.

Are gel and UV lamps harmful? (Dr. Lan Anh explains)

LED curing lamps emit low-intensity UVA for 30 to 60 seconds per coat. For someone getting gel once or twice a month the total dose is tiny compared with daily sun. For people who have worn gel continuously for years, I recommend:

• Broad-spectrum sunscreen on the backs of the hands 20 minutes before, or fingerless UV gloves.
• Never pick gel off: it takes the top layer of the nail with it, causing thinning and splitting. Remove with a 10 to 15 minute acetone soak or a skilled e-file.
• Stop and see a doctor if the skin around the nail turns red, itchy or blistered: this can be an allergy to acrylates in cheap unlabelled gels.

Aftercare

• Cuticle oil every night; gloves for dishes.
• Do not use nails as tools for lids and labels.
• Remove and redo after 3 weeks for gel, 4 for acrylic; longer growth creates a moisture gap that breeds fungus.
• Yellow, thick or smelly nails: stop extensions and book a dermatology visit.

• Daily office: one-colour nude or dusty pink gel; medium length, oval shape for fewer breaks.
• Weddings and parties: almond builder gel, thin French, small stones; do a trial two weeks before.
